• Former Astoria Cinema, Brighton
    • Client: H30 Media Ltd

  • Astoria_600x400_Q30Project

The former Art Deco Astoria Cinema in Brighton was last used as a Bingo Hall in 1996 and has been left unused and empty since.  H30 Media Ltd together with Conran + Partners Architects have developed a vision for the Astoria Cinema site that includes commercial spaces and a new arts and media quarter for the city.

    Our Involvement

We provided the acoustic assessment to support a new planning application for a change of use from commercial to residential on the top floor of the development.  Our work included monitoring of the existing noise environment at the front and rear of the site, calculating the noise levels within the future residential apartments and recommending measures to ensure that internal noise criteria would be achieved.  Navigating a largely derelict building and finding suitable locations to setup the noise monitors was an unusual challenge but one that we enjoyed whilst working on this exciting local development.

  • South Devon Link Road
    • Client: AA Environmental Ltd

  • SouthDevonLinkRoad_600x400_Q30Project

The South Devon Link Road is a 5.5km dual carriageway, which will provide the long awaited bypass for Kingskerswell. The road will bypass the existing A380 between Newton Abbot and Torbay.

Construction for this new road scheme is currently underway with a scheduled completion target of December 2015.

    Our Involvement

7wa is providing acoustic support to environmental consultants, AA Environmental Ltd, including input to Section 61 documentation, construction noise modelling, review of mitigation options, prediction and assessment of construction vibration levels and production of construction noise contour mapping.

We have also trained site staff to conduct noise monitoring during construction and look forward to providing ongoing acoustic support throughout the duration of this project.

  • Cardinal Newman 6th Form College
    • Client: The Governors of Cardinal Newman Catholic School

  • CardinalNewman_600x400_Q30Project

New build 6th Form College including classrooms, common room, café, offices, media room, library and a lecture theatre.

    Our Involvement

We have worked closely with the architect, Morgan Carn Partnership Ltd, reviewing construction drawings and materials to ensure the acoustic conditions met the requirements of Building Bulletin 93 and further achieve the BREEAM acoustic sustainability standards.
Particular attention was paid to the lecture theatre acoustics as the design brief for this space incorporated multiple uses and it was critical that the acoustic environment worked across them all.
We also identified enhancements to the roof structure to improve the control of rain noise.
Once the project is complete we will be undertaking acoustic commission testing to demonstrate compliance with the BREEAM standards.

    Our Involvement

We were commissioned to provide all the acoustic input required to support the planning applications.

This included measuring the existing noise environment, providing design advice to protect future residents from external noise, computer modelling to calculate the levels from new air conditioning plant, working with the architects and M&E engineers to identify measures to reduce plant noise and advising on the sound insulation between commercial and residential properties.

  • Enbox
    • Clients: 7wa & Addiscombe Environmental Consultants Ltd

  • Enbox1_600x400_Q30As part of our involvement in the Crossrail project we saw a need to develop a database system where the numerous Section 61 applications and associated variations and dispensations could be recorded, stored, summarised and easily accessed, along with the consent documentation from the local authority.

To facilitate this the directors of 7wa and Addiscombe Environmental Consultants Ltd teamed up to form Enbox Ltd and together developed a web based system, www.enbox.co.uk,  to handle all the S61 documentation for the Whitechapel area. The system allows Contractors, the Local Authority and Crossrail to easily access all S61 documentation and see which activities have consent. It has proved an invaluable tool for keeping track on all the numerous applications that this project generates and to date over 100 S61 documents have been uploaded. It is currently being used by BBMV JV on Crossrail Contract C512 but is is also commercially available for any Contractor or Local Authority to use.

  • PortZed
    • Client: Habour Developments (Sussex) Ltd

  • PortZED2_600x400_Q30Project

PortZED is a development comprising a zero emission and zero carbon community of buildings over Shoreham Port in Brighton.  It has been designed to the highest sustainability standards and exceeds level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.  It would be the first truly zero carbon development in this country.

    Our Involvement

We were approached to carry out an acoustic assessment of the revised scheme design and provide an acoustic report to support the latest planning application.  Our work involved close liaison with the developers and the local authority to agree an assessment methodology.  We successfully demonstrated that the enhanced glazing and ventilation system proposed would adequately reduce the level of traffic and port noise in the area.  To reduce the level of noise to outside play spaces we recommended an innovative transparent acoustic barrier arrangement so that the aesthetics of the scheme were not compromised.

  • Crossrail Cumulative Noise Manager
    • Client: Addiscombe Environmental Consultants Ltd on behalf of BBMV JV

  • CrossrailWhitechapelStation2_600x400_Q30Project

Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project. The new rail route will run over 100km from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, through new tunnels under central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. The brief for 7wa was to provide a Cumulative Noise Manager for the C512 Crossrail Contractor covering the Whitechapel Area in London

    Our Involvement

Neil has provided acoustic advice on the Crossrail project for nearly ten years working with designers, framework contractors and now assisting construction teams in managing noise and vibration during the build.  He was ideally placed to provide the Cumulative Noise Manager role for Whitechapel having been extensively involved in this area from design stage upwards.

The role involves the management and co-ordination of noise monitoring results, construction noise predictions and works programmes from multiple contractors working in Whitechapel.  Neil also chairs regular noise meetings with the Contractors, Crossrail and the Local Authority.
